Water quality in Öljaren to be improved

Leader Södermanland grants support to projects that will improve water quality and contribute to increased carbon storage in Lake Öljaren. The project will develop a replacement product for peat by utilizing the residual products from the lake.

The Leader Södermanland board grants support to Katrineholm Municipality's project "Öljaren - from lake to plant power". In addition to the work contributing to increased carbon storage, improved water quality in Öljaren and improved soil quality around the lake, the project will also contribute to business development by creating jobs in the area.

”Öljaren – from lake to plant power” is a continuation of a previous project that ran from 2017 to 2023. That project aimed to investigate the effect of returning nutrients from the lakebed to agricultural land. The method used was low-flow dredging, which proved to be a good and gentle method for cleaning Öljaren. Low-flow dredging involves sucking up the top layers of bottom sediments in the lake, pumping it up onto land and then spreading it out into the forest and fields in the surrounding area.

Now the stakeholders are taking the next step to find a replacement product for peat and improve water quality in Öljaren. The project runs until December 2027.
